Acoustic aspects of vowel harmony in French
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper examines acoustic aspects of vowel harmony (VH), understood as regressive vowel-tovowel assimilation, in two regional varieties of French in six speakers’ productions of 107 disyllabic word pairs. In each word pair, the word-initial vowel (V1) was phonemically either /e/ or /o/, and the word-final stressed vowel (V2) alternated between /e-E/, /ø-œ/, /o-O/ or /i-a/. Results are consistent with the idea that VH in French entails variations in tongue height along with related displacements of the tongue position along the front-back axis. These effects were independent of both the number of morphemes and lexical frequency. They were more systematic in Northern than in Southern French speakers’ speech. Linear mixed-effects models strongly suggest that VH is a gradient effect of the trigger on the harmonizing vowel. Results lend support to usage-based phonological approaches regarding gradient phonetic differences as part of the gestural scores that make up the lexicon and that can be variably grammaticalized in different varieties of the language. 2 ha l-0 02 56 38 4, v er si on 1 15 F eb 2 00 8

Perceptual relevance of long-domain phonetic dependencies
This study is concerned with the perceptual relevance of regressive vowel harmony in French. Two experiments were conducted. The first experiment showed that acoustic variations in a non-final vowel depending on the final vowel can be detected by listeners. The second experiment revealed that vowel harmony can facilitate the identification of the final vowel. Implications for current models of ...
متن کاملThe Roles of Word Stress and Vowel Harmony in Speech Segmentation
Three experiments investigated the role of word stress and vowel harmony in speech segmentation. Finnish has fixed word stress on the initial syllable, and vowels from a front or back harmony set cannot co-occur within a word. In Experiment 1, we replicated the results of Suomi, McQueen, and Cutler (1997) showing that Finns use a mismatch in vowel harmony as a word boundary cue when the target-...

متن کاملSchwas in Moro Vowel Harmony
Moro is a Kordofanian language spoken in the Nuba Mountains of Sudan. It has a vowel height harmony system that presents an intriguing challenge due to the dual nature of the central schwa vowel. Schwas in some morphemes can trigger vowel harmony, while schwas in other morphemes do not. In addition, schwas can appear with both sets of harmonic vowels within morphemes, raising the issue of wheth...
متن کاملAcoustic Analysis of Persian EFL Learners' Pronunciation of English Vowels
This paper reports the results of an experimental study on non-native production of English vowels. Two groups of Persian EFL learners varying in language proficiency were tested on their ability to produce the nine plain vowels of American English. Vowel production accuracy was assessed by means of acoustic measurements. Ladefoged and Maddison’s (1996) F1 F2 measurements for American English v...
